Why am I having an adverse reaction to coffee? I thought it was good for me?!
If have been on this page a while, you know I love a good cup of Joe. To me coffee is a like air--it's essential to life. (not literally).
-
However, I am very aware that coffee does not work for everyone. In fact, some people can feel like total cr*p when consuming coffee.
-
So what is the deal?
-
The primary reason someone does not do well on coffee is an energy issue.
-
Let me explain.
-
Coffee is a thermogenic. It SPEEDS things up. Thus, it increases the uptake of glucose by your cells. In layman terms this means you will use sugar faster. GREAT, right?
-
Well, here is the problem.
-
If you are under chronic stress, have poor energy reserves (low liver glycogen), under eat (particularly carbs) and/or try to drink your coffee black it is very likely you will have an adverse reaction. This can look like heart palpations, nausea, anxiety, blood sugar crashes, headaches, etc.
-
This is happening because coffee is speeding up your cells usage of sugar--thus, if you do not have enough sugar in your blood, in your liver, in the coffee you are drinking and/or in the meal you are consuming, you are going to have a blood sugar drop. This drop creates a stress reaction, leading to energy crashes, headaches, anxiety, etc.
-
👉The same thing can happen when someone takes active thyroid (T3) without enough useable energy.
-
If you are going to speed things up, you need to make sure you have fuel (carbs) available.
-
Therefore, if you are having an adverse reaction to coffee, try this
-
👉Consume food (with carbs) prior to drinking coffee.
👉Add plenty of milk and sugar to your coffee.
👉No black coffee on an empty stomach
👉Try adding coffee back slowly 2-3 oz with 8oz milk and sugar
-
If none of these are helpful, then you might need to stay away from coffee while you work on improving metabolic health and/or get out of your stressed state.
-
🔹Just a side note: Correction from my post last week--Coffee is alkaline forming in your body, not acidic. Yes, coffee IS acidic, but the affects it has on your body are alkaline.
